A New Chapter Begins:
The Circular Bioengineering Cluster of Excellence held its kick-off retreat on November 17–18, 2025, bringing together all PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, key researchers, and affiliated members across partner institutions.
Hosted at the Sky Lounge of the University of Vienna, the retreat set the stage for a collaborative research environment dedicated to advancing circular bioengineering, an emerging field focused on sustainable, circular solutions across biological and technological systems.
Through a series of thematic sessions, presentations of the four research programs, and introductions to core units such as Training, Management, and Communication & Tech Transfer, participants gained a clear understanding of the Cluster’s mission, structure, and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.
Beyond scientific engagement, the retreat emphasized building a cohesive, connected community. Activities such as a warm-up mixer, World café, and a group dinner at Gasthaus Rebhuhn foster an atmosphere of openness and shared purpose. By combining academic depth with social interaction, the retreat marked a meaningful beginning for the Circular Bioengineering Cluster setting a collaborative, innovative, and forward-looking tone for the years ahead.
The meeting concluded with informal discussions and a group photo, marking a strong start for interdisciplinary cooperation.
Quarterly meetings will follow to maintain momentum, share progress, and deepen collaboration across teams.
